Lenten Reflections

How is everyone doing with your Lenten disciplines?  How are you all doing with your “Instead of Me” projects?  I’d like to take this opportunity to address some concerns people might be having.

First and foremost, whatever we choose to do for Lent, we are most definitely NOT doing them to earn “extra points” toward the love of God.  God already loves us with an infinite, everlasting love and nothing we can do or stop doing will ever change that.  Why would we want to do these things, then?  Doing little things like these projects helps to take the emphasis off ourselves and put it onto God and other people.  This, in turn, helps us open ourselves to God and grow closer to God.  For, when we are preoccupied with our own concerns, we don’t always experience the love God always wants to shower upon us.  When we really experience this wonderful love, God can shine that love through us to others.

In other words, when we fast or “give something up” for Lent, this serves as a reminder to remove things from our lives that get in the way of our relationship with God. When we feel hungry or choose not to eat something we like, we are also reminded that everything we have is a gift from God.  Fasting also reminds us of those who do not have enough food, and who experience hunger not as a choice.  We remember that God calls each of us to care for those in need.

Some may question if doing little Lenten disciplines is “enough”.  Since being close to God is so wonderful, shouldn’t we be doing wonderful things?  In answer, I’d like to quote Mother Theresa, one of my faith heroes.  “We are not called to do great things, but little things with great love.”

Lastly, a note on perseverance.  If (or should I say when) something doesn’t go quite as you planned (for example you eat something you said you wouldn’t or only read the Bible for a half hour instead of an hour), don’t get discouraged.  If you don’t meet your goal the first time, try again.  And again, if need be.  The effort, the thought, is the important thing.  You are thinking about deepening your relationship with God –and so you are!!

Another great passage for Lent – Ephesians 2: 8-10.
